Three RU teams to nationals
Radford University will send three teams to the FLW College Fishing national championship scheduled for this summer.
The Apprentice School won the the YETI FLW College Fishing event on Smith Mountain Lake with a five-bass limit weighing 16 pounds, 6 ounces. Radford University qualified three teams. They were:
Second place: Christopher Butler and Zack LeMaster (both of Bedford), five bass, 15-6; Third place: Christian Williams (Wingina) and Joshua Greenberg (Montpelier), five bass, 14-12; and sixth place: Jackson Norton (Ferrum) and Nathan Brooks (Rocky Mount) with five bass, 12-10.
YETI FLW College Fishing teams compete in three regular-season qualifying tournaments in one of five conferences – Central, Northern, Southern, Southeastern and Western.
All participants must be registered, full-time students at a college, university or community college and members of a college fishing club that is recognized by their school.
The top 10 teams from each division’s three regular-season tournaments and the top 20 teams from the annual FLW College Fishing Open will advance to the 2020 FLW College Fishing National Championship.
Additional teams will qualify for the National Championship if the field size in regular-season events exceeds 100 boats. The Potomac River and Marbury, Maryland, will play host to the 2019 FLW College Fishing National Championship, June 4-6, 2019.
Hollandsworth U.S. Open
Virginia Tech women’s golfer Amanda Hollandsworth shot a two-round total of 1-under 141 on Tuesday to win a sectional qualifier and earned a berth in the 2019 U.S. Women’s Open Championship, to be played May 30 – June 2 at the Country Club of Charleston in Charleston, South Carolina.
The 1-under total won medalist honors for Hollandsworth, a graduate student from Floyd, Virginia. The sectional qualifier was played at the Springfield Golf and Country Club in Springfield, Virginia. Hollandsworth becomes the first Virginia Tech women’s golfer to qualify for the U.S. Women’s Open.
Two berths in the championship were up for grabs in Springfield and Hollandsworth defeated Karoline Stormo of Kent State by two strokes to win the tournament. Stormo claimed the second available spot for the Open in a field that included amateurs and professionals.
Hokie NFL free agents
Virginia Tech continued to add to its impressive list of alums in the pro ranks following the 2019 NFL Draft as Kyle Chung (Chicago), Yosuah Nijman (Green Bay) and Ricky Walker (Dallas) all agreed to terms of contracts as rookie free agents. In addition, RB Steven Peoples earned a tryout invitation to Arizona’s upcoming rookie camp.
Chung follows in the footsteps of his father, Eugene, who was an All-America selection for the Hokies and a first-round draft pick of New England in 1992. The elder Chung would later earn a Super Bowl LII ring as an assistant coach with the Philadelphia Eagles.
Walker all-state selection
Radford University senior guard/forward Destinee Walker earned 2019 VaSID Women’s Basketball All-State honors, it was announced by the Virginia Sports Information Directors on Tuesday afternoon.
Walker lived up to her pre-season All-Big South First-Team billing with a fine all-around season. The Florence, South Carolina native scored 20 or more point six different times, including a career-high 26 points in the victory at Winthrop on February 19. She reached double-figures in scoring in 27-of-33 contests, tops on the squad. Walker ranked sixth in the conference in scoring (14.0 ppg.), 12th in rebounding (6.4) and 13th in 3-point field goals made (1.5). The West Florence graduate moved into fifth-place all-time at Radford with 1,327 career points.
Virginia Tech had First Team selection Taylor Emery and Second Teamer Regan Magarity.
All-American grapplers
Redshirt junior Korbin Myers and redshirt seniors Tom Sleigh, Billy Miller and Zack Zavatsky have been named to the ACC’s All-Academic team, the conference announced Wednesday.
This marks the fourth time in his career that Zavatsky has been tabbed to the all-academic squad. Myers, Sleigh and Miller, who all came to Blacksburg with academic accolades from their previous institutions, earn all-academic honors in their first seasons in the ACC.
Minimum academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one’s academic career. Athletic achievements during the most recent season are also considered in selecting the All-ACC Academic Team.
The ACC Honor Roll, which recognizes all conference student-athletes with a grade point average of 3.0 for the current academic year, will be released in July.
