Blackshear honored
Just a day after being named All-ACC, Kerry Blackshear Jr. has been tabbed U.S. Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) All-District, as announced by the organization on Tuesday.
Blackshear makes the District III Team along with 10 other players, including nine from the ACC. It marks his first time making the team and the first since Justin Robinson making the team last year.
For each of the nine geographic districts, 10 players are selected (11 in the case of ties in the voting) as well as a player and coach of the year.
The USBWA will release its 2018-19 Men’s All-America team on March 18, along with the finalists for the Oscar Robertson Trophy (National Player of the Year), Wayman Tisdale Award (National Freshman Player of the Year) and the Henry Iba Award (National Coach of the Year).
NRCC motorcycle class
New River Community College will offer two motorcycle courses in April and May, a basic rider motorcycle course and a sidecar/trike riding course.
The sidecar/trike riding course is a noncredit course that will be held April 12-14. The class will be held Friday from 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. in 135 Rooker Hall at NRCC in Dublin and Saturday and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the motorcycle range, parking lot H for riding instruction. Tuition for the course is $149.
The program is offered as training for sidecar and trike operation and is designed to teach riders the skills necessary to safely operate a three-wheel vehicle on the street, even if they have never operated any kind of motorcycle. The 16-hour course takes the rider through the basics of motorcycle operation including effective braking, turning skills, obstacle avoidance and other safe riding strategies.
The second course, Basic Rider Course (BRC), will be offered two different weekends. One session will be held April 26 -28, and the second option is May 3- 5. The class is Friday from 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. in 135 Rooker Hall at NRCC in Dublin. Saturday and Sunday hours are from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the motorcycle range, parking lot H.
The one-credit course includes classroom instruction and on-motorcycle instruction under controlled range conditions. Riders will learn the basic skills of motorcycle operation, effective braking, obstacle avoidance and safe riding strategies. Tuition is $156.55 for Virginia residents.

Quintas Big South POW
Radford University’s Beaatriz Mosquera Quintas (La Coruna, Spain) has been named the Big South Women’s Golfer of the Week, while Campbell’s Emily Hawkins (Lexington, N.C.) is the Women’s Freshman of the Week for events played March 7-13, it was announced today.
Mosquera Quintas claimed medalist honors at the Benbow Invitational (par 72, 6,143 yards) with an even-par 144 (73-71) for her first collegiate victory. She won the event by five strokes, and helped the Highlanders to a second-place team finish.
Hawkins finished fifth at the Florida Gators Invitational (par 70, 6,002 yards) with a 2-under par 210 (69-68-71). She was two strokes off the overall leader, tied for second in the field with 12 birdies, and tied for the lead in par-3 scoring (-5).
Highs picked fourth
The Radford track & field team was picked to finish fifth in the 2019 Big South Women’s Outdoor Track & Field Preseason Poll, the conference office announced Thursday morning.
The Highlanders earned 60.0 points to place fifth at the 2018 Outdoor Championships, their best team result since the 2015 season. Now with a roster full of young and extremely talented athletes, they’re ready to beat expectations this time around.
Conference newcomer Hampton took home the title in both men’s and women’s track & field at those Indoor Championships, so they were subsequently picked the place first in the Outdoor Preseason Poll with eight first-place votes. High Point garnered the other first-place vote.
