The Virginia Department of Transportation is advising drivers to allow extra time if they are travelling in the area of Exit 105 on I-81.
“As part of the ongoing New River Bridge project at exit 105 on I-81, slow rolls will be in place this week as new beams are set over the interstate, weather permitting,” according toa statementfrom VDOT.
The slow rolls were scheduled to begin yesterday, Nov. 5 and remain in place until Friday, Nov. 8, from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. each morning, and “will be in place beginning northbound at exit 101 towards the bridge at exit 105 for approximately two days,”according to VDOT.
“Once northbound operations are complete, slow rolls will begin southbound at mile marker 108 to the rest area,”the statement continues. “Traffic may be stopped for up to 15 minutes per slow roll. In addition, the week of November 11, alternating lane closures will be in place to complete work on the Route 232 bridge.”
As part of the construction, the northbound on-ramp at exit 105 remains closed and a detour remains in place for access to I-81. The northbound off-ramp is using the newly built overpass bridge on Route 232 while the detour is in place.
Drivers should plan accordingly and expect delays in the area. The project is expected to be complete in December 2020.
