A major coaching change has taken place in southwest Virginia high school football. Former Christiansburg and Blacksburg assistant Eddie Sloss has stepped down at Carroll County High School.
Sloss took over the program four years ago and had gone 5-35, including 2-8 this past year. He told school officials he planned to continue to teach and currently serves as the track coach.
This past year, Carroll moved to the Three Rivers District in order to cut down on travel for most of its sports teams while remaining a 4A classification school.
The question was how long Carroll would wait on naming new coach.
Apparently late last week, the school system decided it wouldn’t drag on the search for a new coach and hired former Auburn and Pulaski head man Jack Turner.
Turner had served this past season as defensive coordinator under Mark Dixon at Galax High School. He coached five years at Auburn and stepped down three years ago after a loss in the Group 2A playoffs.
Before Turner arrived, Auburn had 39 straight losses. He broke that mark in his first year of coaching at the school. In the next three years, the team has won at least six games each year and made three straight playoff appearances.
He stepped down at Auburn because of health problems. Turner is expected to begin working with his new team next month as they begin off-season workouts.
