Blacksburg High School has a new football coach, and they didn’t have to look far to find him.
Former Carroll County headman Eddie Sloss will take over a program that has won 20-plus games in the past two seasons including a state 3A title two years ago.
Sloss, who had been at Carroll for the past four years, replaces Thad Wells who resigned last month to take a similar job in Mooresville, North Carolina. Of course, Sloss is no stranger to the Blacksburg program where he once played and was assistant coach.
Before heading to Hillsville, he also served as the defensive coordinator at Christiansburg High School. He also had assistant stints at Auburn and Patrick Henry.
He was a starting wide receiver and defensive back at Blacksburg on the 1989 Group AA Division 4 state championship team and had playing time with the Roanoke Rush semi-pro football team.
His Carroll team was 2-8 this past season, and his overall record at the school was 5-35.
This past year, Carroll moved to the Three Rivers District to cut down on travel for most of its sports teams while remaining a 4A classification school.
Sloss was introduced Friday night at the Blacksburg Athletic Booster Club Shamrock fundraiser but was waiting official approval at last night’s Montgomery County school board meeting. An official statement from the school is expected later today.
