Community Housing Partners recently welcomed Debbie Sherman-Lee of Christiansburg to the nonprofit’s board of directors.

Sherman-Lee joins 12 others on the volunteer board, which provides critical oversight for CHP and helps the organization’s leadership set strategic direction through the guidance and expertise of each member.

“At CHP, we truly value the perspective and counsel of our board of directors,” CEO Janaka Casper said. “Debbie Sherman-Lee brings a wealth of community experience, and we are fortunate that she has committed her time and energy to advance CHP’s mission.”

In 2010, Sherman-Lee retired from Montgomery County Public Schools after 36 years of experience teaching health, physical education, and driver’s education. While most of her career was at Christiansburg High School, she also worked a seven-year stint at Blacksburg High School. Now, she is on the board of the Montgomery County Educational Foundation, which provides grant money to teachers for projects with their students in Montgomery County.

Sherman-Lee, who grew up in Christiansburg and graduated from Radford University, is an active member of the Christiansburg Ruritan Club and the Montgomery-Radford-Floyd branch of the NAACP. She is also a part of the Community Group and board member for the New Mountain Climbers, a Christiansburg-based giving circle, which supports local students and gives back to the community.

Sherman-Lee also serves on the steering committee for the Dialogue on Race, which works to create a forum to address race in Montgomery County.
