After a record-breaking season for the Radford University women’s lacrosse team this spring, junior midfielder Callie Bonnel has been named to the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) All-State Second Team, the organization announced Tuesday afternoon.
Bonnel becomes the program’s first ever all-state honoree in its third year of competition. She also earned a place as the program’s second ever First Team All-Big South selection in May.
“Callie being named all-state is a credit to her hard work and the impressive year she had while showing the growth and positive direction of our program,” said head coach Haley Marvine. “This is a huge honor for Callie and all of Radford lacrosse, especially considering this year’s national championship team came out of Virginia and the overall strength of our sport in our home state.”
The Mechanicsville, Md. native started all 17 games for the Highlanders, setting a single-season school record with 55 goals scored. She also provided eight assists to bring her season point total to 63 while also contributing 43 draw controls, 31 ground balls and 12 caused turnovers.
In Radford’s 22-14 victory over Gardner-Webb back in April, Bonnel set a single-game school record with eight goals scored and tied the Big South’s single-game record for points recorded with 13 when she added a career-high five assists.
Her elite ability to cut through opposing defenses and draw fouls in dangerous areas was on display all season as she set a single-season Big South record with 25 free position goals.
The honor cements Bonnel’s place amongst the top players in the Commonwealth, a state featuring much of the nation’s top talent.
