Spencer Horwitz, a junior first baseman on the Radford University baseball team, was drafted in the 24th round of the 2019 major league baseball first-year player draft by the Toronto Blue Jays on Wednesday.
The Timonium, Maryland native went with the 717th pick, to become the 22nd player to be drafted in the university’s program history. The Highlanders have now had at least one player taken in three straight seasons joining Kyle Zurak (2017/New York Yankees) and Austin Ross(2018/Philadelphia Phillies).
Horwitz followed up his Second Team All-Big South selections in 2017 and 2018 with an Honorable Selection nod in 2019.
Across 56 games played, he led the Big South and ranked top 50 in the nation with 45 walks.
He also ranked tied for sixth in the conference in runs scored (49) and tied for seventh in home runs (10).
Horowitz drove in 41 RBI and stole three bases while accumulating a .465 slugging percentage and a .392 on-base percentage.
