Samira Baylor, Radford High School senior, was awarded a scholarship from Radford University sorority Zeta Phi Beta last week recognizing her community service and scholarship.
This is the first year the $100 scholarship for minority women has been awarded and requires the recipient to possess at least a 3.0 GPA and write an essay.
The national sorority embraces four values: scholarship, service, sisterhood, and “finer womanhood.”
Extensive community service made Baylor’s application exceptional. She is active in French and Spanish clubs, the recycling club, the High Five club and she volunteers at the public library.
Baylor plans an undergraduate degree at Longwood, and a master’s degree in clinical counseling.
The award was presented by Radford University’s Zeta Phi Beta representatives Briana Holmes, a junior in social work, Mykole McCray, a senior in psychology, and Chelsie Townsend, a senior in Health and Human Performance.
The sorority sisters visited the high school to award the certificate to Baylor, whose mother was present for the event and photos in front of the high school trophy cases.
With hugs all around, the Radford women presented the certificate.
“We want to thank you for applying and we wish you the best in the future,” McCray said to a gracious Baylor.
Radford High School guidance counselor, Barbara Chitwood helped the raise awareness of the scholarship.
“You all did very well,” she said.
