The Radford University men’s and women’s basketball teams continue to add to their roster for this upcoming season.
The Radford men have picked up another player thanks to the transfer portal. Florida Atlantic’s Isaiah Gaines is coming to the New River Valley.
Coach Darris Nichols expressed excitement over Gains.
“He is a very talented player and versatile,” said Nichols. “He is a worker and has been a part of an amazing run at FAU, he brings a winning pedigree and mindset. He will make an impact right away.”
The Pensacola, Fla. native appeared in 25 games with the Owls and was a member of the 2022-23 team that made an appearance in the Final Four at the 2023 NCAA Tournament. Gaines earned a season-high six rebounds against Detroit Mercy during the 2023-24 season. Additionally, he scored a season-high seven points in win against Eastern Michigan.
The women’s team has added Angelina Nice, a 6-1 guard from Woodgrove, Va.
Radford Women’s Basketball Head Coach Mike McGuire announced the addition of Nice, an incoming freshman, to the Highlanders for the upcoming 2024-25 season.
She was a member of the VHSL 4A State Championship team, scoring 17 points and 12 rebounds in the state final against 2023 champion Hampton and averaged 18.6 points, 4.7 assists, 7.9 rebounds and 4.8 steals per game during her senior season.
Nice recorded a 40-point game during her senior campaign against Surrattsville (MD) at the Oakton HS Cougar Holiday Tournament and was a McDonald’s All-American Nominee, VHSL 4A State Player of the Year and VHSL 4C Regional Player of the Year and the Catoctin District Player of the Year.
McGuire said Nice caught his staff’s eyes at their elite camp.
“Her effort, athleticism, and upside really stood out to us,” he said. “She is a versatile player that has a strong motor and can make things happen on both ends of the floor. We think she will take off and flourish in a Radford uniform. Angelina is a winner and played for a state championship program at Woodgrove under Derek Fisher, one of the best high school coaches in the Commonwealth. We are excited that Angelina has chosen Radford and look forward to her impact for years to come.”
