The following is a list of forecasted highway projects that may impact traffic traveling in the 12-county Salem Transportation District this week.
Work schedules and construction project timelines are always subject to change and weather dependent. New information is noted by “NEW” and updates are noted when a current project has had an update added to the listing.

Interstate 81
I-81 pavement rehabilitation in Pulaski County
Between mile markers 105 and 103, nighttime lane closures for paving on Interstate 81 will be in place in Pulaski County, Sunday through Thursday, between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m.
I-81 pavement rehabilitation in Montgomery County
An around-the-clock right lane closure on northbound Interstate 81 will impact traffic between mile markers 119 and 121 for a 36-hour time period beginning June 11, starting at 9 p.m. on Sunday and remain closed continuously until 9 a.m. on Tuesday, weather permitting. A paving contractor will be working around the clock to excavate deep into the pavement to repair underlying drains, replace base stone and repave. Before and after the 36-hour right lane closure between mile markers 119 and 121, additional nighttime lane closures for paving on Interstate 81 will be in place at this location in Montgomery County, Sunday through Thursday, between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m.
I-81 bridge repairs over James River, Route 43 & Route 625
Weather permitting, alternating lane closures may be in place on north and southbound I-81 between mile marker 164 and 166. On Sunday night work will be between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. Monday – Thursday nights work will be between 7 pm and 6 am. Work will include improvements to the shoulders and repairs to the bridge deck over the James River in Botetourt County. Estimated completion of this project is fall 2017.
A motorcycle detour will be in place on I-81 northbound beginning at exit 162. All motorcycles must exit I-81 northbound at Exit 162 and follow the motorcycle detour on Route 11 northbound to re-enter I-81 northbound at Exit 167. This detour will be in effect continuously until October 2017.
I-81 northbound pavement repairs MM 149 – 152
Weather permitting, alternating lane closures will be in place on a section of I-81 northbound from mile marker 149 to mile marker 152. Work will include milling, paving, pavement marking and guardrail upgrades. Work will be performed Sunday – Thursday from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. The on ramp to I-81 north from Route 220 north may be closed at times from midnight to 5 a.m. Estimated completion is fall 2017. Extended weekend lane closures are scheduled as follows: Friday, right lane closure from 6:30 p.m.-10:30 a.m. Saturday right lane closure from 6 p.m. to 10 a.m.The on ramp to I-81 north from Route 220 will be closed from 8 p.m. to 12 midnight. Drivers at the exit 150 interchange requiring access to northbound I-81 will need to use Route 11 to return to I-81 north at the exit 156 on ramp. A detour for access to Route 11 is currently in place at this interchange and signs are posted to guide motorists.
I-81 bridge deck overlays from MM 137 to 140
Weather permitting, alternating lane closures may be in place on north and southbound I-81 between mile marker 137 and 140 Sunday – Thursday nights between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. Work will include improvements to the shoulders and repairs to the bridge deck of the bridges on I-81 over Route 635 (Goodwin Ave.) and Route 619 (Wildwood Rd.) Daytime lane closures may also be in place on Route 635 (Goodwin Ave.) and Route 619 (Wildwood Rd.) at various times for repairs beneath the bridges. Estimated completion is fall 2017. Extended 16 hour lane closures are scheduled for the bridge deck overlay of the bridge over Route 619 (Wildwood Road.): Friday, June 16, I-81 northbound right lane closed from 7 p.m. to 11a.m. the following morning. Saturday, June 17, I-81 southbound right lane closed from 6 p.m. to 10 a.m. the following morning.
I-81 bridge deck overlays MM 145 in Roanoke County–
Weather permitting, alternating lane closures will be in place on north and southbound I-81 at mile marker 145, Sunday through Thursday nights between 10-6 a.m. the following morning. Work will include improvements to the shoulders and repairs to the bridge deck of the bridges on I-81 over Route 1836 (Belle Haven Road). Daytime lane closures may be in place on Route 1836 (Belle Haven Road) at various times for repairs beneath the bridges. I-81 northbound New River bridge replacement in Montgomery County
Lane and shoulder closures maybe in place near exit 105. Lane closure maybe in effect during the week from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Shoulder closures maybe in effect at any time during the week. Speed limit is reduced to 60 miles per hour in the work zone. Estimated completion: December 2020.The I-81northbound exit 105 off-ramp will be closed June 12 through June 16 from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Alternating left and right, north and southbound lane closures are in place to demolish the Route 232 bridge. This will likely continue Sunday-Friday nights from 8-6 a.m. until the end of June. At the end of June, nighttime lane closures with slow rolls for beam removal. Slow rolls will be 15-20 min maximum length. Route 605 (Little River Dam Road), lane closures with flagging from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Shoulder closures will remain in place though the duration of the project.
