Many communities throughout the United States are having problems keeping their retail stores alive as online shopping is taking a larger percentage of the retail shopper’s wallet.
Christiansburg has also had its fair share of problems with online competitors, even though the town is considered the retail hub of Southwest Virginia. But during recent months, Christiansburg has experienced several promising developments.
After working with Bromont Investments for the last year, Bromont Investment NRV Marketplace LLC, has purchased the Marketplace, and are planning to invest $53 million s in a makeover of the area. The Marketplace location is one of the best in the New River Valley. After sitting mostly empty for the last decade, the new shopping area will be exciting for everyone.
The new owners will announce future tenants in the coming months. At this time, it appears that a specialty cafe house, three restaurants, a home goods store, and a sporting goods retailer will be some of the tenants. More information will be coming in January.
The New River Valley Mall had some good news in 2018, with several new faces arriving and more coming in the New Year. Planet Fitness opened in August, followed by Dish Network in September, and several stores within the mall changed locations during the year.
In 2019, Wonder Universe, a children’s hands-on museum; Kirkland’s, a home decor and gift store; Ulta a beauty supply/cosmetics store; along with a third tenant to be announced in the spring will replace the old J.C. Penney store.
Good news also came from the old Kmart Plaza, with the addition of Aldi Grocery, Hobby Lobby, and Dollar Tree. It is also expected that another store /restaurant will be developed in the Kmart parking lot in the coming year.
In addition, Virginia Furniture Market, one of the largest furniture retailers in the area, moved to Christiansburg in the fall.
Down town Christiansburg experienced an exciting year with numerous events and several new downtown stores; including the Christiansburg Pharmacy, Brugh Coffee, Dominos Pizza, and Northwest Hardware.
The town also hired a full time Events Coordinator for the town’s farmers’ market and other local activities throughout Christiansburg.
All of these changes will continue to make Christiansburg the place to shop in Southwest Virginia. The town of Christiansburg will continue to work to improve the quality of life of its residents, and to be creative while keeping pace with the demands of the growing population.
