Highlighted by Carlik Jones’ Player of the Year award and Mike Jones’ Coach of the Year selection, the Radford men’s basketball team tallied five Big South Conference postseason honors, announced Monday evening.
Jones was named to the All-Big South first-team. Joining him on the first team is senior Travis Fields, Jr., Chyree Walker was selected for the All-Academic Team.
Carlik Jones has been the go-to guy for Radford all year long. The redshirt junior garnered the program’s fourth Player of the Year award and becomes just the third player to earn the honor. He’s the first player to earn the honor since Art Parakhouski in 2009-10. It’s the second time in his career Jones has earned first-team honors.
Jones has accumulated 16 20-point games and two 30-point outings. He ranks inside the nation’s top 40 with over 19 points per game. He is the 32nd player at Radford to record 1,000 points and is now eighth in program history with 1,498 points. Jones became the 7th player in conference history to reach 1,000+ points and 400+ rebounds and assists.
Fields Jr., has been a key contributor for the Highlanders this season as well. He is 16th in the league with 12.7 points per game and eighth in assists. The senior is averaging more than two 3-pointers per outing and is shooting just under 43 percent from beyond the arc. He notched double digits in 21 of the 30 games this season. He leads the team with 60 3-pointers this season and is second on the team with 31.9 minutes per game.
Mike Jones was named Big South Coach of the Year for the second time in the last three seasons. He coached the team to a 20-win season for the third consecutive time, the most in program history. Along with the 20-win season was a 15-win Big South slate that tied a program record. The 15 conference wins were also the most in Jones’ tenure at Radford.
With a better than 3.0 GPA in Media Studies, Walker was slated as an All-Academic Team member. He has contributed 11.1 minutes off the bench and has appeared in 20 games this season. He notched a season-high 10 points at Mississippi State on Dec. 18.
