Students at Riverlawn Elementary head back to their classrooms after receiving their books from the Woman’s Club of Radford. The Woman’s Club of Radford combined their fall and spring Reading is Fundamental (RIF) book distributions into a two-day event to work within COVID restrictions.
On April 16, club members distributed 800 books to students at Riverlawn Elementary. Then on April 19, Snowville Elementary students were given 240 books. Both schools are in Pulaski County.
Each student received two books in accordance with the RIF program guidelines that says children should receive two new books a year with the books chosen by the child. Because of the COVID restrictions, children did not actually touch the books while they were deciding. Instead, club members opened and displayed the books after the child pointed to his or her choice.
Everyone was masked, and the children were cooperative in following the new procedure. The members of the Woman’s Club of Radford declared their appreciation for the efforts on the part of school personnel in helping them achieve their goal of promoting a love of reading in children.
