RADFORD – Radford City Schools is inviting the pubic to an information-rich event on Wednesday designed to give parents and caregivers useful ways to deal with a variety of topics facing children and teens.
“Radford City Schools cordially invites the school community to join city service providers as we discuss topics facing all students from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade,” reads information released by the school system.
The discussions will be held in round table fashion for small group discussion on a number of different “hot topic” issues in 15-minute increments. The event is set for Wednesday, May 1, from 5 – 8 p.m. in the Radford High School cafeteria and library and food will be provided. Tpoics include:
- Why OneLunch? Join us and understand the thinking behind OneLunch. The OneLunch initiative is sweeping the country and providing more time for students to gather and collaborate! The initiative supports key life skills such as time management, responsibility, and communication.
- Advanced Diploma? Standard Diploma? Which one is a good fit for your student? What are verified credits? Come join our discussion on what the VDOE requires of students in regard to graduation including the Profile of a Virginia Graduate.
- Texting OR Sexting? Radford City Police and RCPS Title IX Compliance Officer will lead a brief session on the dangers of “Sexting.” What is sexting, who’s doing it, why are they doing it, and what are the consequences? Is sexting a bullying act, a sexual harassment act, or an accidental act? Learn what you can do to help your child avoid being the victim of sexting and more importantly, avoid being the student who propositioned someone to send the sext!
- What IS juuling? A Juul looks more like a USB drive than an e-cigarette. Juuls have flavored nicotine vapor and often go undetected by other people. “Juuling” can be difficult to detect in schools and a growing number of students who would have never experimented with smoking are now “juuling.” Many students believe that juuls and vaping are nicotine free. Join us to find out the truth behind this product.
- Teen Drinking-Did You Know…
●Ten percent of Radford teens did not feel their parents would disapprove if the drank regularly.
●Seventy-three percent of Radford teens said it would be easy to get alcohol if they wanted some.
●One out of 3 Radford teens have had at least one drink or more in the past 30 days.
●One out of 4 Radford teens say their family does not have clear rules about alcohol use.

- Marijuana, Legalization and Impact: Prevent Specialists will be on hand to present the facts on how marijuana has changed over the years, the outcomes of recreational marijuana use in states where it has been legalized, and the risk of addiction and other mental health problems, especially in the developing brains of youth.
- New Year, New Schedule: RCPS is implementing a Hybrid schedule for Dalton Intermediate and Radford High School for 2019-2020. Come learn how the schedule works, what to expect in regard to beginning and ending times, how long between class changes, what time lunch will be served, how this change will improve student access, provide additional opportunities for socialization and academic support and create greater course flexibility.
- Attendance Matters! We want all students accessing instruction every day! However, we know that illnesses and unforeseen family events can affect a student’s attendance. How can we work together to find solutions and initiatives to combat chronic attendance? Join this session for more information about Virginia Code, truancy and the truancy process, truancy prevention, chronic absenteeism, RHS school attendance policy, and incentive programs for perfect attendance.
- Work While You Learn/Learn While You Work: Is your child interested in a work-based learning approach that provides a stepping stone to a career? Find out more about how Radford High School CTE students can receive high school graduation credit while gaining on-the-job work experience!
- Course Rebranding: Radford High School is excited to be rolling out new courses which include innovation and academic rigor for our students. Get information about our new DEAP Prep courses, designed to get students ready for Dual Enrollment and Advanced Placement courses. And finally, check out the plans to add innovative courses that provide integrated curriculums such as the proposed Anatomy/Art course.
- Parent Educator Resource Center (PERC): The Parent Educator Resource Center is open to promote students’ success by helping parents and educators come together as a team. Join us and learn how families can find support and assistance in exploring ways to best help their child!
- One-to-One Initiative: RCPS has implemented a one-to-one electronic device initiative for students to access the internet, digital course materials and other educational resources in an effort to promote achievement in all academic areas. Teachers are able to provide feedback and edits to student in real time. If RCPS is providing the data and the equipment, are cell phones necessary in the learning environment?
- Where’s your weakest link? Have you talked to your child about suspicious activity online and do they know to ask for help if something seems unusual? Are they, and you, clicking on the wrong links and visiting sites that can bring on an opportunity for a cybercriminal to “hack” you? Can you identify a phishing scam? Join us and learn how to keep your family safe on the internet!
- Problems into Projects: McHarg and Belle Heth are becoming informed decision makers and letting “Projects Lead the Way.” Check out this curriculum initiative that supports and encourages students to take a scientific approach to observe and interpret the world. Project Lead the Way (PLTW) guides teachers in using a multifaceted, project based approach to help students solve problems or reach a goal. Stop by and check out what PLTW has to offer!
