RADFORD – The Radford Public Library (RPL) is celebrating National Library Week now through Sunday, with several events and special programs on the agenda.

“National Library Week is an annual celebration highlighting the valuable role libraries, librarians, and library workers play in transforming lives and strengthening our communities,” explains RPL Executive Director Elizabeth Sensabaugh. “This year’s theme, Libraries = Strong Communities, illustrates how today’s libraries are at the heart of our cities, towns, schools and campuses, providing critical resources, programs and expertise. They also provide a public space where all community members, regardless of age, culture or income level, can come together to connect and learn.”

Tomorrow,Thursday, April 11, children’s author and illustrator Henry Cole is coming to Radford. Cole has penned such favorites as ”A Nest for Celeste,” and ”Spot, the Cat.”

He will visit McHarg and Belle Heth Elementary Schools and make public appearances at the Radford Public Library and Radford University as a ’Radford Reads with Radford University’ event. RPL staff invites the public to “Come meet Henry Cole at Radford Public Library at 6:30 p.m.”

Copies of Henry’s books (“Unspoken,”  “A Nest for Celeste,” “Another Quest for Celeste,” and ”Try a Little Kindness”) will all be available for purchase (cash or check only). The program is funded by Radford University Departments: McConnell Library, Teaching Resources Center, School of Education and Leadership and College of Education and Human Development, and Radford Public Library’s Lamplighters.

Also this week:

Fine forgiveness week: Begin, or end, National Library Week, (April 7-13), “with a clean slate,” says Sensabaugh. “Update your library account and have all of your overdue fines removed. Stop in and make this request in person, the library would love to see you again.”

Free Library card replacement week: Present your damaged card or your ID, and the library will issue you a new card without a replacement charge.

DVD access is increased to 10 adult and 10 juvenile per library card. Enjoy more DVDs. The RPL borrowing limit of four DVD’s per card has been increased for your viewing pleasure.
