RADFORD – The Radford City Police department is warning the public about scam calls regarding jury duty.
“It has come to our attention that several community members have received phone calls from individuals impersonating law enforcement,” the department announced. “These callers claim that the recipient owes a fine for missing jury duty and demand payment over the phone sometimes even requesting payment via gift cards.”
“Please be aware that neither the Sheriff’s Office nor the Radford City Police Department will ever call to collect fines, nor will they accept gift cards as a form of payment,” the announcement continues. “We encourage you to alert family members, especially those not on social media, about this scam. Remind them that phone numbers can be spoofed, meaning the number shown on caller ID may not reflect the true source of the call.”
If you are ever unsure whether a call is legitimate, hang up and call our non-emergency number at 540-731-3624.
