RADFORD – The Radford City Police Department is participating in National Night Out, an effort to bring communities and police departments together.
National Night Out, sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch (NATW), is “an annual community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make neighborhoods safer, more caring places to live,” according to NATW. “National Night Out enhances the relationship between neighbors and law enforcement while bringing back a true sense of community. Furthermore, it provides a great opportunity to bring police and neighbors together under positive circumstances.”
Radford’s event is set for Tuesday, Aug. 6, 6 – 8 p.m. at Bisset Park. According to RCPD, this year’s event has a special component to help a Radford child recovering from a significant injury earlier this summer.
“This year, we’re excited to introduce a brand-new event – a fire truck pull to benefit Harper’s Fund, supporting the Owens family,” the department announced. “Our very own Lieutenant Coffey has bravely pledged to pull one of the Radford City ladder trucks, which weighs over 50,000 pounds, over a distance of 40 feet! Let’s come together and cheer him on as he pulls for Harper.”
“Members of the Radford City Sheriff’s Office, where Harper’s dad (Sgt. Dwayne Owens) serves as a sergeant, will be on hand to accept donations at the event. It’s a great opportunity to support a wonderful cause!”
In addition to the fire truck pull, the department will have crime and fire prevention materials, neighborhood watch opportunities, and fun obstacle courses for kids.
“It’s a night of community, safety, and support that you won’t want to miss!”
