NRCC offering handgun safety class this month
New River Community College will offer a handgun safety class on Tuesday, June 13, and Thursday, June 15.
Both class meetings will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. at 206 Edwards Hall in Dublin. Range time will be offered on the Saturday following the class.
The cost of the course is $60.
The six-hour classroom portion of the course, instructed by Joey Williams, is required. However, range time is optional. The class is intended for individuals who are applying for a handgun permit through the courts, and will cover topics such as the nomenclature of revolvers and/or semi-automatic handguns and safety issues related to handgun ownership. Participants will also learn how to care for, maintain and store their handguns.

Washington Street Closure
Washington Street adjacent to the intersection with Duck Pond Drive will be reduced to one lane of traffic June 12-23. Flaggers will be in the area to direct traffic.
Council Appointed Boards and Committees
Town Council’s annual appointment and reappointment process is underway for various boards/commissions/committees. If you are interested in applying, please fill out the Statement of Interest application. Applications from town residents preferred. Application deadline is June 15, 2017.
The following boards/commissions/committees are seeking citizen volunteers for 2017 appointments: Board of Zoning Appeals (seeking two alternate members), Housing and Community Development Advisory Board (applicant must have development, construction or real estate background), Historic or Design Review Board (applicant must be property owner and resident of Historic District), Recreation Advisory Board (seeking two board members).
At the end of each fiscal year, Town Council considers citizen appointments to various boards, commissions, committees and task forces. Statements of interest applications are updated each May to include eligible membership opportunities. At that time interested citizens should complete the Statement of Interest application and forward it to the Town Clerk at clerk@blacksburg.gov or P.O. Box 90003, Blacksburg, VA 24062-9003 for consideration by Town Council.
June 10, BLANKET DAY
NRV Project Linus Blanket day will be this Saturday from 9-3 p.m. Meet at the Grove United Methodist Church in Radford, Va. Volunteers are needed to help with lunch items, specifically from the following list:
Veggie or fruit tray- 2-3 volunteers needed
Dessert Tray- 3-4 volunteers needed

Dance Center of SW Virginia Sold
Sandra Smeltzer, owner and director of The Dance Centre of Southwest Virginia, has sold the school to Mark Shepherd and Pedro Szalay, effective in August of 2017. Ms. Smeltzer will continue to teach children’s classes under the new ownership. More information regarding the school and plans for the future will be forthcoming from the new owners.
June 5, Paving of Radford Streets
The City of Radford will begin paving streets the week of June 5, 2017. Crews have already begun prep work for the project and the paving project will begin on Fairway Drive, from Ridgecrest Lane to Buckeye Lane, causing traffic disruptions and detours.
Paving throughout Radford will take approximately 4-6 weeks and will be done in the following order:
Fairway Drive: Ridgecrest Lane to Buckeye Lane
Jefferson Street: East Main Street to Tyler Avenue
Walker Street: From West Main Street
Sixth Street: Walker Street to Harvey Street
Paving Order is subject to change.
Antique Appraisal at the Alexander Black House & Cultural Center June 15
Have you ever wanted to go on PBS’s Antiques Roadshow? This is the next best thing. Bring your family heirlooms for an appraisal by local experts, and check out other treasures that have been hiding in the attics of other Blacksburg resident on June 15 from 7-9 p.m.. Appraisers include Katie Heiskell from Heirloom Originals, Larry Linkous from Linkous Auctioneers, and Robert Miller from Miller Off Main Street Galleries.
The cost is $5 per item (limit of three per person), or $5 entry for spectators. Space is limited, so sign up by June 13 and tell what you are bringing, or if you’re just coming to watch.
