RADFORD – The Radford High School Foundation, Inc. has awarded a record amount of $43,950 this year through 20 separately named scholarship funds.
During the recent Academic Awards Assembly at Radford High School, 19 scholarships were awarded to graduating seniors. In addition, four graduating seniors received scholarships announced during the annual Radford High School Athletic Awards program held separately.
All scholarships are paid directly to the college or university for the benefit of the award winner. Several scholarships are multi-year awards. In total 28 scholarship winners included 23 current graduating seniors and five alumni recipients of scholarships awarded this year in memory of or in recognition of outstanding persons who were loved and/or contributed greatly to our schools and community.
Formed in 1986, the Radford High School Foundation, Inc., is a nonprofit 501(c) (3) tax exempt organization formed by friends and alumni for the sole purpose of supporting Radford’s already successful school system.The foundation awards scholarships to college-bound seniors in recognition of their academic achievement, community service, leadership, career goals, and/or athletic participation. The foundation has awarded more than $775,000 for classroom grants and scholarships since its formation.
Lindsey Riddle was the winner of the $500 S. V. Subba Rao and Kishore Family Scholarship, which was presented for the first time this year. It was established by Dr. Lakshmi Kishore in memory of her father, the late Mr. S.V. Subba Rao, who was an eminent lawyer and legal advisor to the government of India and the state of Andra Pradesh. He encouraged Dr. Kishore to pursue higher education, and she became the first female physician in the entire family. Dr. Kishore and her husband, Dr. Anand Kishore are physicians who have practiced in the New River Valley for over 30 years. Their sons, Sandeep and Sanjay, graduated from Radford High School and attended Duke University for undergraduate studies. Both are physicians who completed their residency at Harvard Medical School.
The scholarship is awarded to the most deserving student who has interest and passion in the field of medicine and a commitment to pursue further studies in the medical field.
The Marilyn Alley Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Katelyn Shumate,who was the first recipient of this memorial scholarship. Through the joint effort of Radford High School, the Alley family, and community support this scholarship was created in Marilyn Alley’s memory. Alley was to graduate from Radford High School with her classmates in 2022 until her untimely
death earlier this year. She passed away on Feb. 26 as the result of a car accident.
She had plans to attend Liberty University and become a nurse.

Dana Palmer Memorial Scholarship to Nate Wesley, the 4909 Basketball Honorarium Scholarship (a two-year award) to Joseph Mitchell, the 4909 Basketball Honorarium Scholarship (a two-year award) to Jada Dean; and the Allen “Big Al” Hall Memorial Scholarship to Ally Brown.
Currently serving on the Radford High School Foundation Executive Committee are Chairman
Abie Williams, Vice Chairman Chip Craig, Secretary Ruth Clark, and Treasurer Mandy Martin.
Other board members are Dr. John Semones, former School Superintendent Dr. Michael
Wright, Palma Clark, Bev Davis, Albert Mah, Jeff Caldwell, Nikki Cumberland, and Eli Mullins.
School Administration representatives on the board are Superintendent Rob Graham, and Radford High School Principal Tara Grant. Foundation Advisory Board Members are Harrison Williams and Whitney King Stokes.
