RADFORD – Radford City Public Schools experienced a cyberattack Tuesday, June 10, affecting its network, but no student data was compromised in the incident.
RCPS Superintendent Dr. Adam Joyce informed the school community about the incident in an emailed letter on June 10.
The letter read: “I am writing to inform you that Radford City Schools experienced a cybersecurity incident affecting portions of our network. As soon as we became aware of the situation, we immediately activated our security protocols, enlisted the support of top cybersecurity experts, and began working closely with state and federal law enforcement to investigate the source and scope of the issue.
We are grateful that this occurred during summer break when schools are closed and summer school classroom learning is not impacted. This timing gives us space to focus fully on our response and ensure our systems are safe and secure well before the bulk of our students and staff return.
All safety-related systems, including security cameras, doors, and phone lines, remain fully operational. However, some internal IT systems are currently affected as we undertake a careful and thorough restoration process.
Unfortunately, cyberattacks are an increasing reality for organizations of all kinds, including schools. We are using this incident as an opportunity to strengthen our systems and enhance our defenses for the future.
We also want to acknowledge the trust our Radford City School community, and especially our students and their families, have in our organization. That trust matters deeply to us. We are committed to being transparent and keeping you informed as we learn more. This will be an ongoing process, and we’ll share updates when we have new and meaningful information.
Thank you for your patience and understanding as we navigate this process.”
Monday, Joyce said student data was not compromised in the incident.
“No student data was breached,” he said. “We keep all of that information separate and it was unaffected.”
“At this time, there are no further details that I can provide, but we are committed to transparency as we learn more.”
