The Virginia School Boards Association has released its 21st annual VSBA Showcases for Success directory, highlighting successful K-12 programs in Virginia’s public schools.
Radford City Public Schools is one of 56 school divisions from across the Commonwealth that has programs featured in the directory. Programs from McHarg Elementary and Belle Heth Elementary are:
McHarg 2nd Grade Swim School
McHarg Elementary and the Christiansburg Aquatic center will be offering second-grade students swimming and water safety lessons. Second grade students will take part in the eight-week program during the last quarter of our school year. Each student will have eight 30-minute swim classes, 30 minutes of swimming free play, and a safety lesson with each visit. Living on the New River and having access to a variety of water sports can provide recreational fun for all of our area families.
McHarg Elementary has nearly 60 % of children living in poverty. Not all of our students can afford swimming lessons. We believe that this proactive program combined with rigorous academics allows for a well-rounded student. This will be the 6th year swim school has been offered to Radford City Schools second grade students.
Parent Educator Resource Center for Radford City
The Parent Educator Resource Center was created as a support system for parents, educators, and our community. The PERC exists to promote student success by helping parents and educators come together as a team. Our staff is available to offer guidance about the special education process, family involvement activities, and links to various community resources and information. This school year we have had several workshops.
First, we had training for parents on understanding the IEP process.
Secondly, we had a workshop for parents and students to create sensory items for student use to offer sensory integration and maintain focus/attention in the classroom/home.
Thirdly, we united with TTAC and held a workshop for the “I’m Determined” project which focuses on teaching our youth with and without special needs self-determination skills. We are also offering a transition fair in March for our parents/students with special needs so they know their opportunities after high-school.
