Destiny Sweeney was determined Eastern Montgomery was going to win Thursday’s 1A Conference 45 track meet at Radford High School. Sweeney won five events, but it still was not enough as Auburn claimed the team title by a 145-91 mark.
Sweeney won the 100 meters, 200 meters, high jump, long jump and triple jump. Meanwhile Auburn’s Caitlyn Dominy won both the 800 meters and 3,200 meters.
The host-Radford would finish third in the girls’ competition with 81 points.
Radford’s Tyashia Gellner ran award with the girls’ 100 meter hurdles with a time of 18.29, with second going to Parry McCluer’s Valencia Harden. Eastern Montgomery’s Chayla Mullins was third.
Gellner would finish fourth in the 100 meters with Eastern Montgomery’s Emma Ryan in fifth.
Auburn would squeeze second and fourth places I the 1,600 meters with Laurel Miller and Grace Hall sandwiching Radford’s Anneliese Stewart who finished in third. Abbey Stone of Auburn finished in fourth in the 200. Eastern Montgomery’s Emma Ryan was fifth.
Auburn’s Jaeda Gutierrez would place fourth in the 3,200 ahead of Eastern Montgomery’s Gillian Nichols.
Jessica Mussellman would lead three Auburn Eagles across the line in the 400 with Abbey Stone and Elizabeth Tomlin 2-3. Radford’s Ragan Hale and Meigs Helm finished fourth and fifth in the event.
Auburn, Radford and Eastern Montgomery would be 1-2-3 in the girls’ 4X400 relay, and Dominy led three Eagles in the top four of the 800 meters with Laurel Miller in third and Grace Hall in fourth.
Radford’s Mary Brown took the discus with a thrown of 121-03, while Auburn’s Madelyn Sale was second.
Eastern Montogmery’s Destin Sweeney claimed top honors in the high jump with a 5-0 mark with Radford’s Taylor Hamblin in second place.
Gellner also took third in the triple jump with Bobcat teammate Taylor Hamblin in fifth.
On the boys side of the track, Covington outdistanced Radford 173 to 105 ½ points for the team title.
Auburn’s boys (94) was third and Eastern Montgomery (56 ½) fifth.
Radford’s Jaylin Taylor raced to first in the 110 meter hurdles, and Joshua Downing was first in the 1,600. Eastern Montgomery’s Trey Wilson was second, followed by Auburn tandem of Tyler Wilson, Peyton Hurd and Adam Downs.
Taylor also took the boys’ 300 meter hurdles at 48.16 with Eastern Montgomery’s Joel Gardner second.
Auburn’s Brandon Justice was second in the 400 with Radford’s Josh Alley and Harrison Bush in third and fourth.
Radford’s 4X100 relay team finished second with Auburn in fourth. Radford would also take first in the 4X400 relay and Eastern Montgomery claimed top honors in the 4X800 relay.
Radford’s Downing would claim his second title with a first place in the 800. Eastern Montgomery’s Trey Wilson was third. J.W. Bethea would also pick up second for the host Bobcats in the high jump.
Auburn took all six spots in the boys’ pole vault with Eddie Tickle leading the way.
