RADFORD – Property owners who believe their property was assessed at higher than market value will have a chance to make their case this September.
The City of Radford recently posted notice that a city council-appointed Board of Equalization has been named and will hear appeals this September
Commissioner of the revenue Cathy Flinchum explained that while “the time for the appeals to the assessing firm has passed, the Board of Equalization meetings will happen in September.”
“This is the next avenue for appeals,” said Flinchum.
The city announced, “the Board of Equalization for the City of Radford will meet for the purpose of hearing complaints of inequalities, including errors in acreage,” in September.
“Upon hearing such complaints, either oral or written, the board will give consideration and increase, decrease, or affirm such real estate assessments,” the announcement reads. “Before a change is granted, the taxpayer or agent must provide substantial evidence that the property is not uniform with other similar properties or prove that the property is assessed in excess of its fair market value.”
All hearings will be scheduled by appointment only on Monday, Sept. 16, 2024, 9 a.m. – noon; Tuesday, Sept. 17, 2024, 2- 7 p.m.; and Monday, Sept. 23, 2024, 9 a.m. – noon and 2- 7 p.m.
Anyone who wants to appeal must make an appointment to appear before the Board of Equalization. Appointments will be scheduled every 15 minutes to minimize waiting. To make an appointment to appear before the Board of Equalization, please call 731-3613, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Meetings of the board to hear objections will be held at the Radford Municipal Building, 619 Second Street or the Radford Public Safety Building, 10 Robertson St.
