Former Christiansburg High School pitcher Alex Perkins is transferring from Bluefield College to Radford University.
“Playing Division 1 baseball has always been a dream of mine and I’m blessed to say coach Raccuia along with the rest of the coaching staff has given me the opportunity to make that come true. Radford is right down the road from home, so I get to be with my family and friends I grew up with more often,” he said.
Perkins, who announced the move earlier this week on Twitter, had played the past two seasons at Bluefield, going 9-6 this past year with a 4.31 earned run average with 107 strikeouts and 29 walks.
He has been clocked in the lower 90s off the hill and could play a role in pitching for the Highlanders next spring.
He struck out 15 Trinity Christian College batters in a 13-4 Bluefield win this past season in the NCCAA World Series and also struck out 15 batters in a complete game four-hitter against Oakland City University in NCCAA Mid-East Regional play and had four games of double-figure K’s during the regular seasons.
“They [RU staff] believe that I can make an impact on their program and that I will help them win on the mound. I’d love nothing more than to help our team go as far as we can go. A national championship is always something to work hard for. I’m excited to play against the competition in the Big South. It will test my abilities and I’m always up for that challenge,” Perkins said.
The player feels he has gained experience and has grown not both as a player and a man.
“I’ve played against tough competition. Being the number one [pitcher] at Bluefield put a lot of pressure on my shoulders and I learned to use that to my advantage and it worked out in ways that benefited me and my team,” Perkins continued.
He hopes to study biology and pursue a profession in the medical field.
