RADFORD – A 21-year-old woman struck by a car Saturday night remains hospitalized in critical condition, members of the Radford Police Department said Monday.
The Radford City Police Department is investigating the accident, which occurred on Saturday, Sept. 7 at about 9:54 p.m.
According to Radford Public Information Coordinator Jenni Wilder, “a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle in front of 33 West Main St.”
“The pedestrian is identified as a 21 year-old female, Jael Osterbauer and [she] was airlifted to Roanoke Memorial Hospital to be treated for her injuries.”
At Monday’s Radford City Council meeting, RPD Chief Angie Frye Sgt. Drew Szoerkman said Osterbauer remains in Roanoke Memorial Hospital in critical condition. The officers said the victim was crossing the street between Applebee’s Grill and Bar and the Radford Public Library when she was hit by a vehicle.
During Monday’s meeting, city council members expressed dismay at the pedestrian vehicle accidents that occur in the city, particularly on Tyler Avenue and Main Street.
“We may need to look at improving our lighting in some areas,” said Mayor David Horton.
Council member Robert Gropman happened to be doing a ride-along with the Radford Police Department when the accident occurred Saturday night and said he was very impressed with the way the scene was handled.
“They were at the accident scene extremely quickly and everything was performed with precision and executed while they completed the harrowing task at hand,” said Gropman.
