The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has announced a second park-in-ride lot for Montgomery County.

The facility would be located off I-81 Exit 114 at the corner of Route 8/Main Street and Mudpike Road.

The 1.5-acre facility will be located about 0.2 mile north of the exit 114 interchange and be accessed from Route 666 (Mud Pike). The new park and ride will include approximately 80 parking spaces, a bus shelter, bike racks and lighting. Sidewalks and a crosswalk across Route 8 to tie into the existing pedestrian facilities also will be constructed.

Construction is expected to begin this spring and be completed by the winter of 2027. The estimated cost of the project is $6.7 million.

This is the second park-in-ride to be located in the Christiansburg area. In 2017, a space near the Falling Branch Elementary School was moved along Roanoke Street to with 270 spaces. The site has a location for the Mega and Smart Way bus stoppage.

The new park-in-ride is to be located on a site that initially had been earmarked for the expansion of Exit 114 off Interstate 81. VDOT is currently examining that future project and what it would look like.
