New River Community College will offer two graphic design programs this year, an associate degree and a career studies certificate. Seven art courses will be offered in the fall semester for these programs.
The general studies-visual communication design AA&S degree is designed for people interested in transferring to a four-year institution to finish their bachelor’s degree. The career studies certificate in visual communication design is for individuals interested in the basic skills required to work in the autonomous and mobile industry of graphic design.
Graphic designers are responsible for making book and album covers, infographics and posters, logos, packaging, signage, motion graphics and more.
The art courses offered this fall include:
Drawing I is designed for beginning students. Students will work in several dry media and develop a portfolio. This course is offered in Dublin.
Fundamentals of Design I & Fundamentals of Design II are required for all art degrees and are directly transferrable to four-year colleges. The courses are portfolio based with a variety of assignments that cover all the elements and principles of design. These courses are offered in Dublin.
Introduction to Graphic Skills focuses on building a portfolio with InDesign where students learn to create projects for publication such as CD covers, brochures and books. This course is offered in Christiansburg at the college’s NRV Mall site.
Computer Graphics I will focus on building a portfolio with Photoshop where students learn to manipulate images to be used for branding with icons, logos and designs. This course is offered in Christiansburg at the college’s NRV Mall site.
Computer Graphics II focuses on building a portfolio with Illustrator where students learn to create images used in the graphic and fine arts. This course is offered in Christiansburg at the college’s NRV Mall site.
History of Design covers the very origins of image making and continues up through the contemporary status of advertising. This course is offered online only.
