Students taking graphic design courses at New River Community College get an idea of the field and an understanding of Adobe® software.

Ryder Deal, NRCC graduate, with a tri-fold table tent she was hired to create for Pulaski County this summer.

The NRCC graphic design courses provide students with an introduction to Adobe® products, creating projects, learning the software and printing. Students will learn basics that are necessary in advancing with the software. Ryder Deal, NRCC graduate, said she enjoyed being able to put what she learned to use in class projects.

Deal earned an associate degree in general studies in 2016. She is currently a student at Radford University and plans to receive a bachelor’s degree in graphic design.

“If you are considering going to a four-year college for graphic design, I recommend taking the graphic design courses at NRCC to give you a taste of the field and an understanding of the Adobe Software,” Deal said. “Even if you already know bits and pieces, it’s a great way to sharpen your skills through professor-guided tutorials and challenging projects.”

The courses at NRCC were a great preparation for the graphic design courses she would take at Radford and they gave her a step ahead explained Deal.

Three graphic design courses NRCC is offering this fall semester at the NRV Mall site in Christiansburg include “Introduction to Graphic Skills,” “Computer Graphics I” and “Computer Graphics II.”

“Introduction to Graphic Skills” will work with InDesign® and teach students basic studio skills and concepts. The course will emphasize concept development and problem solving using traditional art materials and computer techniques. InDesign® is a page design and layout program used to create and publish brochures, fliers, magazines and other documents.

“Computer Graphics I” will work with Photoshop® to produce computer graphics. The course will use techniques learned to create studio projects which reinforce instruction and are appropriate for portfolio use. Photoshop® is an image and design product used to create and enhance photographs, web designs, 3-D artwork and more.

“Computer Graphics II” will utilize Illustrator® to produce computer graphics. The course will use techniques learned to create studio projects which reinforce instruction and are appropriate for portfolio use. Illustrator® is a vector graphics product used to create logos, icons, illustrations and more.

Registration is in progress. Fall classes begin Monday, August 28. To see the fall semester class schedule, visit www.nr.edu/schedule. Current NRCC students may register for classes online by visiting their student accounts.
