RADFORD – Musher Karen Land and her sled, Noggin, recently made the rounds at public libraries in the area, with a stop at the Radford Public Library Tuesday, July 8.

Land is a writer, public speaker, and three-time participant in the 1,000-mile Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race. She has also competed in numerous sprint and endurance races across Alaska, Canada, Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, and Maine. Since 2000, Land has traveled to nearly every U.S. state with her sled, mushing gear, Arctic clothing, and beloved dogs, delivering over a thousand educational presentations at schools and libraries.

“We had so much fun with Karen Land and Noggin the sled dog,” the library said in a social media pot. “We learned a lot about the Iditarod race, sled dogs, and how mushers (the people in sled dog races) prepare for such a feat of endurance. Noggin was obviously the star of the show! She is an Alaskan Husky, a mixed breed that is bred purposefully to be a sled dog.”

Land told attendees what it feel like to ride the runners behind a team of dogs, steering a loaded sled through mountainous terrain, crossing the vast Alaskan tundra, hugging the shoreline of the great Bering Sea. She also detailed what it takes to care for a team of Alaskan huskies.

2025 marks the 100th anniversary of the legendary 1925 Diphtheria Epidemic Serum Run, when sled dogs Balto, Togo, and the many heroic huskies and mushers carried life-saving antitoxin across the harsh Alaskan wilderness to the town of Nome.

The event was sponsored by the Radford Lamplighters and was held as part of the library’s Summer Reading Program. The Summer Reading program will wrap up with one last big event Thursday, July 24 at 3 p.m. with “Big Bang Boom! a concert for kids.”

“Join us for an exciting musical event,” the library announced. “Big Bang Boom, a parent-friendly kid’s music band, will be here to help us wind down the Summer Reading Program. Groove to the music and [participants in the Summer Reading Program can] pick up prizes.
