Renter education workshop, Friday
Workshops are for tenants, landlords, and those considering renting. Great for college students starting out on their own. Different dates/times/locations for your convenience. Register at least 2 days prior to workshop date. Refreshments provided. Topics discussed include repairs & other common disputes, fair housing laws & eviction in Virginia, and a guide to leases, deposits, & payments.

Sons of Confederate Veterans meeting, July 11

NRCC offering handgun safety class, July 18-20
New River Community College will offer a handgun safety class on Tuesday, July 18, and Thursday, July 20.
Both class meetings will take place from 6-9 p.m. at 206 Edwards Hall in Dublin. Range time will be offered on the Saturday following the class.
The cost of the course is $60.
The six-hour classroom portion of the course, instructed by Joey Williams, is required. However, range time is optional. The class is intended for individuals who are applying for a handgun permit through the courts, and will cover topics such as the nomenclature of revolvers and/or semi-automatic handguns and safety issues related to handgun ownership. Participants will also learn how to care for, maintain and store their handguns.

Senior Police Academy, July 17
The Christiansburg Police Department, Christiansburg Recreation Department and Christiansburg/Montgomery Triad S.A.L.T. Council are now accepting applications for the 2017 Senior Citizens’ Police Academy. The academy, which will be held July 17-21, from 9-3 p.m., is free and open to any citizen 50 years and older.
During the five-day course, participants will tour the Christiansburg Police Department and Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, learn about the drug task force and vice units, meet the K-9 units, visit the firing range, hear from a variety of speakers and learn about self-defense, internet crimes against children, radar and DUIs, investigations, and evidence collection.
Applications can be picked up at Christiansburg Recreation Center, located at 1600 North Franklin Street. Boating safety course for operators of boats and personal watercraft, July 23
The boating safety course will be held on Sunday, July 23 from 8-5 p.m. at Water’s Edge Building, Claytor Lake State Park, 6620 Ben H. Bolen Drive, Dublin. The course is taught by the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 83 and the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries (DGIF). Materials and instruction are free.
Bring a highlighter, pencil and lunch. Each graduate earns a wallet card showing successful completion of the class. Most major insurance companies endorse the course and allow insurance premium discounts to graduates.
This course is approved by the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators and recognized by the United States Coast Guard. Farmacy Garden
A community garden is located right next to the Health and Human Services Building, at 210 pepper street SW. Volunteers are needed to help the Montgomery County Health Department with the garden this season. The hours are Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays from 9-12 p.m.
They grow a wide array of vegetable crops, as well as fruit crops (and just installed some berry bushes and brambles.) All volunteers get to take home some produce, so this opportunity would be especially good for anyone that might need a
little extra help affording fresh fruits and veggies. They have six raised beds in the garden that are senior accessible (four that you can work in from a seated position and two that you can work in standing). Call RSVP for more details.
3rd annual Jazz & Ribs Feast, July 28
The Fine Arts Center for the New River Valley and The Southwest Times are happy to announce Pulaski’s 3rd Annual Jazz & Rib feast will be Friday, July 28, 2017, 11 a.m. -11 p.m. in Jackson Park, located at 42, 1st Street, NW in Downtown Pulaski, Virginia across from the town municipal building.

Bridge Workshops
Bridge workshops will be held on Saturdays from 10-3 p.m. at the Radford Recreation center, located at 200 George Street in Radford. Deserts and beverages will be provided. The cost is $30 per workshop. The event is hosted by the Women’s Club of Radford and proceeds help to benefit children’s literacy programs in the NRV. RU planetarium shows
The RU planetarium will hold additional showings this month on July 7, 14, 21, and 28. The show will involve an intro to the night sky, a tour of the planets, and then the amazingly-popular full-dome show “The Violent Universe: Catastrophes of the Cosmos.” This show is produced by Evans & Sutherland. The show is narrated by Sir Patrick Stewart, and tells the stories of comets, asteroids, and meteors hurtling through space; stars collapsing under their own gravity; and infernos of nuclear energy releasing their deadly radiation across the universe. Visitors will see the raw power of the cosmos in this thrilling show that gives you a front-row seat to watch as worlds collide. “Violent Universe” is most appropriate for ages 8 and up, and is a thrill-a-minute adventure. All shows are free.
