Micah’s Backpack
During the summer months, Micah’s Backpack is seeking volunteers to help pack bags, load cars, restock shelves, and break down packaging on Wednesday nights at 6 pm. Set-up begins at 5:30 pm.
When school resumes, they go back to packing on Thursday nights at 6 pm. Volunteers meet at Saint Michael Lutheran Church, 2308 Merrimac Road, Blacksburg.

Flushing of Fire Hydrants
The Water/Wastewater Department began flushing of fire hydrants on Monday. The flushing will take about a month to complete. Any questions can be directed to Rodney Howell, Water/Wastewater Director at (540) 267-3149.

Due to a waterline break, water has been temporarily cut off. Repairs have been scheduled.

Summer concert series
We are offering Free Concerts in Bisset Park at the Gazebo every Tuesday night in July and the first week of August. Concerts are held from 7pm-8pm. Bring your chair or blanket and enjoy some local talent. Concerts may cancel due to storms. For cancellation information, please contact the Radford Recreation Center at (540) 731-3633.

Boating safety course for operators of boats and personal watercraft, tomorrow
The boating safety course will be held on Sunday, July 23 from 8-5 p.m. at Water’s Edge Building, Claytor Lake State Park, 6620 Ben H. Bolen Drive, Dublin. The course is taught by the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 83 and the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries (DGIF). Materials and instruction are free.
Bring a highlighter, pencil and lunch. Each graduate earns a wallet card showing successful completion of the class. Most major insurance companies endorse the course and allow insurance premium discounts to graduates.
This course is approved by the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators and recognized by the United States Coast Guard. Farmacy Garden
A community garden is located right next to the Health and Human Services Building, at 210 pepper street SW. Volunteers are needed to help the Montgomery County Health Department with the garden this season. The hours are Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays from 9-12 p.m.
They grow a wide array of vegetable crops, as well as fruit crops (and just installed some berry bushes and brambles.) All volunteers get to take home some produce, so this opportunity would be especially good for anyone that might need a little extra help affording fresh fruits and veggies. They have six raised beds in the garden that are senior accessible (four that you can work in from a seated position and two that you can work in standing). Call RSVP for more details.

The Fine Arts Center for the New River Valley and The Southwest Times are happy to announce Pulaski’s 3rd Annual Jazz & Rib feast will be Friday, July 28, 2017, 11 a.m. -11 p.m. in Jackson Park, located at 42, 1st Street, NW in Downtown Pulaski, Virginia across from the town municipal building.

Red Cross blood drive, August 4
The annual Blood Drive at Virginia Tech’s Lane Stadium will be held on Friday, August 4 from 11-4 p.m. Volunteers are needed on this day to work registration, canteen, and provide donor assistance. Parking passes will be provided in advance by the Red Cross. For more information, call RSVP.
New River Watershed Roundtable, August 26
On August 26th, 2017, Floyd, Giles, Montgomery, and Pulaski Counties, and the City of Radford, will host the Fall 2017 ReNew the New Regional River Clean-up Event. All five localities are cleaning-up different sections of the New River watershed, whether it be on the New River or on one of its tributaries.
