Eric Kenneth Newby, Jr., of Radford passed away at home on December 18, 2017. He is survived by his wife of 66 Years, Freda M. Newby, daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Douglas Thompson, sons and daughters-in-law Clifford Eric and Charlotte Newby, Stephen Michael Newby, John Joseph and Cathy Newby, nine Grandchildren, 10 Great-Grandchildren, sisters Neata Stire and Charlotte Mitchell, and many Nieces and Nephews.
Born on August 8, 1929, Eric was a cadet at VPI and joined the Army Air Corps. He was a retired Senior Master Sergeant from the US Air Force and was a logistics engineer at Radiation, Inc. of Palm Bay, Florida during the NASA Apollo program. Eric and his family returned to Virginia in 1971. He attended and was an instructor at New River Community College and later became the Building Official for the City of Radford. Upon retiring from the city, he started “Ask Eric”, his own small contracting business that he operated until January of this year. He was an avid fisherman and storyteller. A man of great intelligence and character above reproach, he inspired and touched many lives and he will be fondly remembered by all that had the privilege of knowing him.
At Mr. Newby’s request, there will be no visitation or service. He will be interred in the Southwest Virginia Veterans Cemetery, Dublin. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the American Cancer Society or to a charity or organization of your choice.
