New River Community Action’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program now has available IRS-certified volunteers to provide free basic income tax return preparation with electronic filing to qualified individuals.
Assistance is available through Tax Day. Participants should bring all the necessary tax documents with them.
To qualify for the free tax preparation, the household income must be $56,000 or less. Volunteers will prepare personal federal and state income taxes.
The VITA tax sites will be closed on holidays and in case of inclement weather.
The tax sites are as follows:
For residents of Radford (not including Fairlawn), the site is the Radford City Commissioner of Revenue Office, .619 Second Street, Radford; phone 540-731-3613. Drop-offs will be accepted on a walk-in basis between the hours of 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday through Friday.
For other residents of Montgomery County, the site is the New River Community Action Montgomery Emergency Assistance Office at 110 Roanoke Street in Christiansburg; phone: 540-382-6187. Hours and times vary; call ahead for availability.
For Pulaski, one site is the Pulaski County Commissioner of Revenue Office for Pulaski County residents only at 52 W Main St, Suite 200, Pulaski; phone: 540-980-7750. Call ahead for an appointment to drop off. A second site is the New River Community Action Pulaski Emergency Assistance Office at 412 N. Jefferson Ave. in Pulaski; phone: 540-980-5525. Hours are Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Call for an appointment.
VITA Volunteers are still needed. Persons wishing to volunteer should call 540-382-6187.
Both spouses must be present if the taxpayer is filing a married joint return. The taxpayers should bring a photo ID and social security cards for both parties and all dependents. The taxpayer should bring a copy of last year’s tax return, all applicable forms such as W-2’s, 1098’s and 1099’s, a form 1095-A (marketplace health insurance), information for income deductions and credits, the total paid to day-care providers along with their tax ID number, and in case of a direct deposit of the refund, proof of the bank accounting and routing numbers.
VITA is not able to prepare a schedule C with loss, depreciation or business use of home; a complicated schedule D (capital gains and losses), a form SS-5 (request for Social Security number), a form 8606 (non-deductible IRA), a form 8814 (child taxed at parent’s tax rate), a form SS-8 (determination of worker status for purposes of federal employment taxes), health savings accounts and international and military returns.
