The New River Blues Society, in partnership with Christiansburg Institute, Inc. (CI, Inc.) is proud to present an unforgettable afternoon with blues icon Gaye Adegbalola.

Join us for Rhythms of Resistance, an afternoon filled with soul-stirring blues music, storytelling, and empowerment. The event will take place at The Lyric Theater in Blacksburg Feb. 22 at 2 p.m.

A Blues Music Award winner and founding member of Saffire – The Uppity Blues Women (1984-2009), Gaye Adegbalola is one of the most respected voices in the blues world. With a career that spans decades, Gaye’s powerful guitar and harmonica playing, coupled with her compelling songwriting, have earned her international recognition. Her musical journey includes 10 CDs released on Alligator Records, six albums on her own Hot Toddy Music label, and an anthology of selected songs, Satisfied! (2023), showcasing her post-Saffire career.

But Gaye’s artistry isn’t just about music, it’s about the message. Through her powerful songs and personal stories, she offers a poignant reflection on her own experiences in the fight for civil rights. From her early involvement with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., to participating in sit-ins and picketing, to embracing the Black Power Movement and the teachings of Malcolm X, Gaye’s music serves as a testament to her path toward self-empowerment, equality, and freedom.

This is an opportunity to not only enjoy incredible music but to also engage with a living legend who has contributed to the soundtrack of the civil rights struggle in the United States.
