Virginia Tech head men’s basketball coach Mike Young announced Thursday the addition of David Moats as an assistant coach.
Moats comes to Blacksburg after spending nine seasons at Boise State where he served in a variety of roles, including the past few seasons as an assistant coach for the Broncos.
Across his nine seasons with the Broncos, Moats has helped the program post six 20-win seasons while reaching the NCAA Tournament three times (2022, 2023, 2024). Boise State amassed a 174-90 (65.9%) record in his tenure.

David has worked for nine years at Boise State for Leon Rice, a coach that I admire a great deal. He has earned respect at every stop in his career, and we’re confident he’ll make an immediate impact as we continue to pursue excellence on and off the court.”
Beginning his tenure with the Broncos in June 2017, Moats was the program’s director of operations for his first five seasons. In July 2022, Moats was promoted to assistant coach and was tabbed as the director of recruiting. In that position, Moats was tasked with responsibilities in recruiting, player development, rebounding and game scouting.
Prior to Boise State, Moats spent three seasons with Weber State, where he helped the Wildcats advance to the postseason twice, including the 2016 NCAA Tournament. At Weber State, he assisted with all areas of the program, including travel and scheduling.
Before his time with the Wildcats, Moats was a graduate assistant coach at Florida. He worked with the Gators during the 2012-13 and 2013-14 seasons and was a contributing member to a Final Four run in his final season. While there, Moats earned his master’s degree in sports management.
A native of Guernsey, Wyoming, Moats played basketball for two seasons at Northwest Junior College. His coaching career began immediately after his playing days, serving as a student assistant coach at the University of Wyoming while finishing his undergraduate studies in 2012.
