Auburn High School is advertising for a new boys’ head basketball coach after Terry Millirons announced he was stepping down after 19 years on the sidelines.
Millirons led the team to another state championship game this past year and is 195-125 in 13 seasons in charge of the boy’s program. He is also 81-57 after six years on the girls’ side of the court.
In his time coaching the boys, Millirons captured seven Mt. Empire District regular season and tournament titles, four Region C championships including the last three in a row, and two state titles in 2020 and 2022.
Over those years, he was also privileged to coach both his sons.
This weekend, Millirons said the decision to step down was a tough one.
“This was my youngest son Nick’s senior season, and he is heading off to UVA for college,” he said. “My oldest son, Ethan, is still in college and playing basketball for East Stroudsburg the next two seasons. With both kids in college, I wanted to be able to have the flexibility to go and see them when we wanted and to catch as many of Ethan’s games as possible.”
Coaching those two, according to Millirons, has been the most rewarding experience he has ever had.
“A lot of times you hear of that being a strain on the father/son relationship, but I will always look back at that as great times,” he said. “It has helped that we have had so much success the last six seasons with one or both of them in the program. The state championship win in 2022 will always be special to me because they were both on the team.”
He admits there is not really one thing that stands out in his memory on the sidelines.
“The thing you remember the most are all the fun times we had together,” he said. “The teams hanging out at the house for pregame meals, trips to Orlando to play in the KSA Tournament and bus rides back after big wins.”
He doesn’t plan to change much of his life after coaching. He owns Hall’s Garage Doors but knows he will have a little bit more time in the afternoons.
