Michael Anthony “Tony” Asbury, 59, of Elliston, Va. died peacefully Tuesday night, June 22, 2021 at Lewis Gale Medical Center in Salem.

All of his life, Tony worked in helping professions where he served and cared about people: first, at group homes where he worked with the mentally handicapped and disabled; then a Catawba State Hospital in Catawba, Va., before finishing his career with the Good Samaritan Hospice of the New River Valley.

Tony enjoyed cooking, traveling, and being with family and friends. He loved his many pets over the years.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his two brothers. Dana Scott Asbury and Timothy Eugene Asbury.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 30 years, Janice Asbury of the home; stepsons Matt Carter of the home and Mark Carter of Bluefield, W.Va.; granddaughter Hannah Carter of Bluefield,  W.Va.; nephews Chris Asbury of Christiansburg, John Asbury of Radford, and Josh Asbury of Princeton, W.Va.; brother-in-laws Ivan Marshall of Elliston and Kenneth Widener of Bluefield; sister-in-law Jo Ann Henry and husband Claude of Botetourt, Va.; dear friends Clayton Hall and Eddie Smith of Princeton, W.Va.; and his beloved dog, Dusty, of the home.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. at Seneca Baptist Church in Elliston on Monday, June 28, 2021. Interment followed at Woodlawn Cemetery in Bluefield. Pallbearers were Chris Asbury, John Asbury, Matt Carter, Mark Carter, Clayton Hall, and Kenneth Widener.

The family would like to thank Dr. Richard Prokopchak, Dr. Michael Davis, Dr. Laflam and the Davita Dialysis Center, Intrepid Home Healthcare, and the Shawsville and Christiansburg Ambulance Service.

McCoy Funeral Home in Blacksburg was in charge of arrangements. Condolences may be left at their website.
