RADFORD – McHarg Elementary School first grade teacher Lindsay Lesko is the 2024 Radford City Public Schools Teacher of the Year.

Lesko was one of four school level awardees, who were chosen by the faculty members of their respective schools. She was chosen after a committee interview process and will now be considered in the statewide Teacher of the Year competition.

Lesko’s principal, Dr. Michelle Greene, says Lesko’s positive attitude and desire to learn and grow as a teacher are some of the qualities that make her great.

“She shows up each day with a smile on her face and a genuine enthusiasm for teaching,” said Greene. “Her ability to create a warm and welcoming classroom environment is truly remarkable, and her students thrive under her guidance.”

“As a literacy leader in our school, Ms. Lesko consistently seeks out opportunities to incorporate best practices into her teaching,” Greene continued. “She is always eager to learn and grow, including seeking out professional development, like LETRS, to enhance her instructional practices in the classroom. Ms. Lesko is committed to staying up to date with the latest research in the science of reading and pedagogical approaches in which she creates a dynamic and engaging learning environment for her students.”

Greene says Lesko’s “advocacy for all students, particularly those with disabilities” is another great quality.

“She goes above and beyond to ensure that every student in her classroom has access to the support and resources they need to thrive,” said Greene. “Ms. Lesko’s dedication to inclusive education sets a powerful example for her colleagues and has a profound impact on the lives of her students.”

Lesko is a member of the Radford City Public Schools Innovation Grant team and of the New River Valley Chapter of the Virginia State Literacy Association (VSLA).

“Lesko is an exceptional educator who embodies the qualities of a Teacher of the Year,” said Greene. “We are very proud of her hard work and dedication and appreciate her so

Much.”

The other school level teachers of the year are Radford High School social studies teacher John Ferguson, Dalton Intermediate School math teacher Tammy Dye and Belle Heth Elementary School fifth grade teacher Robin Hoosier.
