Radford women’s basketball head coach Mike McGuire has been named Big South Coach of the Year for the second time in his career, the conference office announced Tuesday afternoon.
McGuire led the Highlanders to a 22-7 regular season record and a 15-3 clip in conference play. Radford has won 20 games in back-to-back seasons, marking the first time the Highlanders have done so since the 2006-07/2007-08 campaigns. The 15 Big South wins set a new program record.
Radford ended the regular season on a 10-game winning streak, longest by a Big South team during the season, while winning 14 out of its last 15 games.
“To me, a Coach of the Year award is a result of having determined, hard-working and selfless people in and around the program. This is a program recognition in every way,” McGuire noted. “I am blessed to be the women’s basketball coach at Radford University and cherish this opportunity daily.”
In his fifth season at the helm of the Highlanders, McGuire has led Radford to an 88-66 record over the span, including an 81-43 mark over the last four years. The Highlanders have played 32 games that have been decided by three points or less since the 2014-15 campaign, holding a 24-8 record during that time.
After going 4-10 in home games during his first season in 2013-14, McGuire has guided the Highlanders to a 46-9 record inside the Dedmon Center, which included a 21-game winning streak.
“I would like to thank my family, our administration, coaches, student-athletes and managers for the opportunity to lead this program. Radford Women’s Basketball is a special program with a bright future.”
McGuire joins Charlene Curtis as the only two-time winner of the award in program history. Radford has won the award seven times in its storied program.
