RADFORD – Radford Mayor David Horton recently joined The Woman’s Club of Radford at the Reading is Fundamental book distribution at the school.
The Woman’s Club of Radford provides books to thousands of children each year through five literacy programs: McHarg Reading is Fundamental- serves pre-kindergarten through second grade in Radford’s public school system. Each child gets the opportunity twice a year to select a book of their very own. This program serves more than 400 children.
McHarg “One School One Book Program”- helps provide a third book to every student via the “One School One Book program.” This program gives a selected chapter book to all students, faculty, and staff at the school.
Babies Into Books- gives a book to every baby born at Carilion New River Valley Medical Center (more than 1,000 children each year),and also provides a pamphlet for the family on the importance of reading to children.
Baby Basics Mom’s Club- provides books for the Baby Basics Mom’s Club operated by the staff at CNRVMC. The Mom’s Club is a place where pregnant women come together in a safe and nurturing environment to learn about issues that can lead to poor birth outcomes. As part of this program, mothers are encouraged to read to their babies.
Riverlawn Reading is Fundamental– serves all students at Riverlawn Elementary in Pulaski County, which serves pre-kindergarten through fifth grade. Each child gets the opportunity twice a year to select a book of their very own. This program serves more than 400 children.
The Woman’s Club of Radford was founded in 1901 and focuses exclusively on children’s literacy. The club’s programs are supported through donations, grants, fundraising events, and retail charity programs.
