Jama McGee Mason, 70, of Radford, died Nov. 13, 2024, surrounded by family. The daughter of the late James and Maggie McGee, she grew up in Yuma, Virginia, graduating as the valedictorian of Gate City High School in 1972 and receiving a degree in accounting from Virginia Tech. An avid and tenacious genealogist for the past 28 years, she was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Joe McGee, and, among others, her ancestor the Holy Roman Emperor, Charlemagne.
Jama worked as an accountant for over 30 years, including 27 years at Volvo Trucks in Dublin. She made many great friends through the years, with whom she remained close in retirement. After retiring early in 2015, she was finally able to spend the last several years pursuing things she enjoyed, receiving a certification as a Master Gardener, traveling, reconnecting with old friends, and spending time with her grandchildren.
She is survived by her husband of 45 years, Bill Mason; her son Fred Mason (Natalie Namrow) of Fairfax; her daughter Katie Mason Yates (Lyle Solla-Yates) of Charlottesville; grandchildren Warren Mason, Rowan Yates, and Cassie Mason; siblings Nancy Alley (Doyle) of Yuma, Linda McGee of Charlottesville, Joy Chapman of Yuma, and Jimmy McGee (Malina) of Gray, Tenn., as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, and close friends.
The family will receive friends 10 a.m. noon Saturday, Nov. 23, 2024, at the Mullins Funeral Home in Radford. The floor will be open for remarks and/or comments about the wonderful life of Jama from 11:30 a.m.-12 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Cancer Society.
The Mason family is in the care of Mullins Funeral Home & Crematory in Radford.
