MONTGOMERY CO. – After leading police on a vehicle chase that began in Giles County and ended in Montgomery County, a West Virginia man was shot and killed by police.
“Jason Lee McDuffy, 44, Beckley, WV, died at the scene on Peppers Ferry Road in Montgomery County Tuesday after being shot by police,” according to the Virginia State Police. “The incident began in Giles County when McDuffy was stopped by police with a suspected stolen trailer. McDuffy fled the traffic stop and led police on a chase into Montgomery County and onto Peppers Ferry Road, just outside the Town of Christiansburg. As officers approached the vehicle, McDuffy presented a firearm and was shot by police.”
Christiansburg and Blacksburg police officers assisted in the attempted apprehension of the suspect. The Towns of Christiansburg and Blacksburg released a joint statement about the incident.
“On Tuesday morning, June 4, 2024, a police pursuit was initiated in Giles County at 6:54 a.m. that crossed into Montgomery County,” the statement reads. “Blacksburg police responded to a request for mutual aid deploying spike strips in an attempt to immobilize the vehicle. The suspect continued driving after hitting the spike strips and entered Christiansburg town limits. Christiansburg Police continued pursuing the vehicle, which entered back into Montgomery County and was stopped on Peppers Ferry Rd. at Vickers Switch Rd. Units from the Town of Christiansburg, Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office and Virginia State Police conducted the stop.”
“The Virginia State Police, Bureau of Criminal Investigation, Salem Division, at the request of the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, is conducting an investigation into the shooting,” stated the VSP. “Once the investigation has been completed, the findings will be turned over to the Montgomery County Commonwealth Attorney’s Office for review.”
