Radford University Director of Athletics Robert Lineburg has been appointed a member of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Rules Committee, effective immediately. The appointment is set to run through Aug. 31, 2021.
Lineburg, who enters his 12th year as the AD at Radford, joins several prominent names in the industry. His selection comes following the departure of Jeff Jackson, who recently left the Big South Conference for a position as Associate Commissioner of the Big 12 Conference.
“It is a great honor to be selected to the NCAA Men’s Basketball Rules Committee,” said Lineburg. “I look forward to collaborating with the coaches and administrators on this committee as we work to make a positive impact on the great game of college basketball.”
The committee features thirteen members including six from Division I, three from Division II and three from Division III. NCAA guidelines also place a quota of at least 25-percent administrators and 50-percent coaches while two representatives must be present from each of the four geographical regions.
Joining Lineburg from the Division I ranks of the NCAA are Rick Barnes (Head Coach, Tennessee), Bob Huggins (Head Coach, West Virginia), Tad Boyle (Head Coach, University of Colorado, Boulder), Richard Johnson (AD, Wofford) and Stu Jackson (Sr. Associate Commissioner, Big East Conference).
“Robert is the perfect person to represent the Big South on the Rules Committee,” Big South Commissioner Kyle Kallander said of Lineburg’s appointment. “His extensive basketball and administrative experience gives him the knowledge and insight that will be so valuable to the Committee deliberations, especially as it considers significant changes to the game. The respect others have for him in college athletics also gives him immediate credibility at the national level. Robert will be outstanding!”
In his time on the committee, Lineburg will most certainly be aided by his varied background in collegiate basketball. He has experience serving as chairman of the Big South Conference Subcommittee on Basketball Improvement and previously worked on the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Issues Committee.
Prior to that, Lineburg spent 15 seasons as a college basketball coach including time at Southern Methodist (SMU) as both an assistant coach and interim head coach. He also coached at James Madison, UNC Greensboro and Emory & Henry as well as with the Dallas Mavericks summer league team.
Following a career as a player himself at both Radford University and Roanoke College, Lineburg got his start in coaching as a graduate assistant on the Virginia Tech men’s basketball staff while getting his master’s degree.
