For their efforts, Christiansburg High’s Kendall Lewis and Trey Wilson are the 2019-2020 indoor track all-county, all-city athletes of the year.
Lewis and Wilson were both looking to follow up an outstanding indoor track season with an even better outdoor one, but they will never have the opportunity because of everything associated with the coronavirus. The Christiansburg seniors will just wonder what could have been.
Last month, Kendall Lewis (left) and Trey Wilson helped lead Christiansburg High School girls’ and boys’ teams to regional indoor track titles. Both have been named Region 3D performers of the year.
Lewis won four events for Christiansburg at the Region 3D indoor track championships en route to being named the girls’ Region 3D performer of the year. Lewis took the long jump (17 feet), high jump (5-2), triple jump (33-11) and 55-meter hurdles (8.64 seconds).
Wilson, who won the 1,600 (4:26.33) and 1,000 meters (2:39.61) for the Blue Demons, was named the boys’ region performer of the year. This fall he will take his talents to Liberty University.
Wilson is a two-time 4X8 VHSL 3A state champion, the 2019 3A Indoor Track and Field 1600-meter runner up, the 2019 3A Indoor Track and Field 1000m runner up and will be competing in the New Balance Nationals again in March 2020 in the 800-meter event. His personal best in the 1600 is 4:23 and 800 1:59. He has posted a cross-country 5K time of 16:17. Wilson also finished fourth in the 1600 of the 2019 3A Outdoor State Track and Field competition.
Lewis would follow up the regional success by winning the 55-meter hurdles in the state Class 3 event. She crossed the line with a time of 8.46 minutes, almost two-tenths of a second ahead of her second-place opponent. The mark also set a new school record for the senior sprinter, who is headed to Radford University to run track in the fall.
Lewis was coming back from a serious injury that knocked her out of the entire 2019 outdoor season. Now, they will both look to college.
