Josephine Martin Leonard, fondly known as “Dolly” and “Nanny,” of Radford, passed away peacefully at home Aug. 27, 2025, at the age of 94. She is now reunited with her loving husband, retired Lt. Col. Edward Leonard who served in the United States Air Force and later enjoyed a distinguished career with the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
Born Jan. 22, 1931, Dolly graduated from the University of Buffalo with a degree in nursing and went on to a memorable career providing care for brain injury patients and their families in Leesburg.
Dolly is survived by her son, Tom and wife Terry Leonard, grandson Tommy Leonard and wife Alisa, great grandson Jason, daughter Kathy and Tom Lillard; grandchildren Kevin Lillard and wife Kendal, Rachel Lillard, Kasey Lillard and her “little friend” Will Young; great grandson Grayson Lillard; and her beloved cat and companion, Toby Jon.
Dolly was known for her quick wit, infectious smile, and prided herself on her independence. Dolly loved attending Naval Academy functions, class of 1952 tailgates, watching classic movies and Navy Football. She especially enjoyed weekly dinners with family and friends at her beloved BT’s.
The family would especially like to thank Father William Yagel for his comforting support and guidance, dear friends Billy Nunn and Pam Martin, Hannah Morgan, “bonus daughter” Shellie Huber, and friends and neighbors Lee Slusher, and Jenn and Katie Bondurant. She loved them all.
The family received friends Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2025 at the Mullins Funeral Home in Radford. Funeral services followed with Father William Yagel officiating. Interment will follow at a later date in Arlington National Cemetery.
The Leonard family is in the care of the Mullins Funeral Home & Crematory in Radford.
