MONTGOMERY COUNTY – As part of the ongoing New River Bridge project at exit 105 on I-81, demolition of the remaining side of the bridge on Route 232 over I-81 will begin this week, weather permitting.
According to the Virginia Department of Transportation(VDOT), “from June 18 through June 21, and June 24 through June 28, lane closures in both the north and southbound lanes from mile marker 104 to 106 will be in place from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. the next morning.”
The work will also stop traffic periodically for 15-minute intervals.
“Slow rolls on I-81 at mile marker 101 northbound and mile marker 108 southbound will be used to remove the beams by crane,” reads the information released by VDOT. “Traffic may be stopped for up to 15 minutes per slow roll between the hours of 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. the next morning. Drivers should plan accordingly and expect delays in the area.”
The northbound on-ramp at exit 105remains closed.
“As part of the construction, the northbound on-ramp at exit 105 is currently closed for six months and a detour remains in place for access to I-81,” according to VDOT. “The northbound off-ramp will continue to use the newly built overpass bridge on Route 232 while this detour is in place.”
