Virginia Tech women’s basketball sophomores Regan Magarity and Chanette Hicks have been named to the 2017 Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) all-state first team.

Magarity was a solid inside presence for the Hokies all season, tallying 15 double-doubles on the year to finish 23rd in the NCAA and second in the ACC, while setting a program record for consecutive games with a double-double with seven straight. She was the only player in the ACC to average a double-double in league play (13.8 points, 10.3 rebounds).

Magarity led the ACC in rebounds with 9.6 per game and was 38th in the NCAA, including the second-highest single-game rebound performance in the league with 17 against North Carolina. The Norrköping, Sweden native was second on the team and 18th in the ACC in points per game with 13.5.

In addition, she finished fourth in the ACC in blocks and set a Tech season record versus ACC opponents with 25. Magarity hit double-digit scoring in 24 games, including six with 20-plus and double-digit rebounding in 17, including three with 15-plus. Off the court, Magarity excels in the classroom as well, earning All-ACC Academic Team honors.

Hicks was dynamic in the backcourt for the Hokies this year, setting the Tech record for most steals in a season with 123, breaking the sophomore class record and the record for most steals in ACC play. As a sophomore, she has already set the program record for most career steals against ACC opponents with 82.

The Norfolk, Virginia native led the ACC in total steals and steals per game, ranking second and fifth in the NCAA, respectively. In addition, Hicks tallied the second highest single-game steals tally this season in the league with eight in two games (Tennessee and Radford). She ranked eighth in the league and led the team in scoring with 16.1 points per game.

Hicks was third in the ACC and 34th in the NCAA in assists per game with 5.2 and had the second-highest assist tally in a game this season with 13 at Auburn, tying a Tech single-game record.

Following her performances against then-ranked No. 17 Tennessee and College of Charleston, Hicks was named ACC Player of the Week and espnW National Player of the Week on Nov. 28. She again earned ACC Player of the Week honors on Dec. 19.

This marks the first all-state honors for the Hokies since Uju Ugoka was named to the first team in 2014. It is the first time that two Tech players have made the first team in the same season. The last time two players were honored in the same year was 2009 when Utahye Drye was on the first team and Lindsay Biggs earned second-team honors.
