RU softball photo _ Hannah Medlam had the only hit for the Radford University softball team in Wednesday’s loss to Virginia Tech.
For the first time in 19 games this season when it held an opponent to two or less runs, the Radford softball team was unable to come away with a victory as Virginia Tech claimed a 2-0 home win Wednesday night in the non-conference finale.
The Hokies scored an unearned run in the second inning and got an insurance home run in the sixth to earn a split of the season series between the New River Valley foes.
Hannah Medlam had the lone hit in the game for the Highlanders (25-22), extending her hitting streak to five games. Abby Morrow suffered the tough loss, allowing just the one earned run on five hits, with three strikeouts and one walk.
However, Carrie Eberle followed up 7.1 scoreless innings on Tuesday against Western Carolina the complete-game shutout. She struck out three and walked three.
Virginia Tech got the game-deciding run on two different type of hits to left field in the second. Lauren Duff led off by blooping one in front of Lauren Maddrey, who appeared to lose sight of the ball in the sun. Emma Strouth then hit the next pitch for a solid single, and when the ball got past Maddrey, Duff came home. Morrow got the next two Hokies, before Eberle singled to put runners on first and third, but a groundout to third limited the damage.
Medlam, who had driven one deep to center for a long out in the first inning, singled to left-center leading off the fourth. Two groundouts moved her to third, but another left her stranded.
Breanna Davenport homered over the right-field fence on the first pitch of the sixth to make it 2-0.
Hunter Mundy drew her second walk of the game to start the seventh and bring the tying run to the plate. After two more groundouts, Tech second baseman Olivia Lattin made a diving stop to take an RBI hit away from Summer Robinson and get the final out.
The Highlanders now focus on the last six games of Big South Conference play, witha doubleheader will this afternoon with the opener televised by ESPNU at 2 p.m.
