Selma Joshua Knowles “Sam” passed away on the evening of Dec. 23, 2017 at his home in Christiansburg. He was born in Montgomery County, VA on Nov. 22, 1934 to the late Alvin and Ruth Ella King Knowles.
He was preceded in death by his wife Janet Lilly Knowles, sisters Kitty Martin and Bonnie Hall. He is survived by his daughter Susan and her husband, Dave Potts and son Steven and his wife, Amy Greer-Knowles.
Sam treasured being a grandfather to Leah and Lilly Potts and Bailey and Kenna Knowles. He is also survived by his sister and brother-in-law Jane and Jim Sterling, his sister Phyllis Wilborn, brother-in-law John Lilly and his wife Anita Lilly, and sister-in-law June McCoy. Left to cherish his memory are also many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Sam worked for the Virginia Department of Agriculture as a food inspector and field supervisor in the meat, dairy, and poultry division. He enjoyed trout fishing and working on and collecting John Deere tractors. He also enjoyed bluegrass music as well as building and constructing homes. The family wishes to thank those who cared for Sam during the last years of his life, especially Nancy, Michelle, Lee Ann, and Sandra.
Funeral Services will be conducted Thursday, Dec. 28, 2017 at 2 p.m. in the McCoy Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Gary McCoy officiating. Interment will follow in the Roselawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 12-2 p.m. Thursday prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a charity of your choice in Sam’s name. Arrangements by McCoy Funeral Home, Blacksburg.
